Aundha Nagnath

This Jyotirlinga temple is located almost 50 km away from Parbhani, a district HQ town nearby. Aundha is very small town, hence you may not find a nice hotel to stay there. However, If you stay in Parbhani, you can cover another Jyotirlingam Temple- Parli Vaijnath which is 75 km away from Parbhani in opposite direction. This is ancient temple, it seems top half is rebuilt recently. Some locals said, it was temple was destroyed by Aurnagzeb, hence renovated later on.
Another interesting fact about Aundha Nagnath temple is everything is kind of “Reverse” as the name of the temple signifies. If one observes the snake carvings on all of the pillars the hood of the snake will be upside down and so is the large Nandhi facing a different direction and that is why the name of the temple is so. The Temple is also unique in two aspects. First, It gets closed for half an hour approx. 3-4 times in a day, like any Shri Krishna temple, for preparation of Aarti etc. Still the queue does’nt become too long & its quite manageable in 30-40 minutes. Second, the Jyotirlinga is located below the ground level in a small basement like area entrance to which is very narrow and only one entrance can be used for the incomers and outcomers as well. But it looks like a small adventure, hence fun!!!
